Sense of Community

Flint, Michigan. Highly maligned by its native son Michael Moore in his movies, and frequently listed among the worst, most stressful, dangerous, impoverished, segregated and economically disadvantaged cities in this country. While statistics and public opinion are stacked against Flint, many of its people haven't given up hope. Life goes on, sometimes a struggle, each giving back in their own way to make Flint a little bit better place. —“Sense of Community” was a self initiated, self produced, photographed and written weekly photo column by Flint Journal chief photographer Steve Jessmore. The national award winning photo column was featured in the Sunday Flint Journal from 2004-2008. The following pages are the columns in their entirety.

“…We have to stop, take notice and lend a hand to make where we live a better place.”
